I suspect it would work well as a GM'd game - admittedly almost anything can work well if you have a GM - but a GM could provide interesting strategic balance, whereas I fear PvP would just dissolve into a 40K-esque scrum.Charliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05494958315546165602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2355959932852753291.post-75007764293153323392015-07-11T11:01:23.582+01:002015-07-11T11:01:23.582+01:00Heh, yeah... they should probably call them Hammer...Heh, yeah... they should probably call them Hammer Angels, or Ultramahammers. I am kind of stuck in a weird position on this entire issue. So here's just a quick stab at explaining my angle on the whole WHFB vs Aos.

I love Warhammer, the Old World is a rich and expansive setting that has almost limitless storytelling potential. I am truly sad that GW have literally blown it up.

Warhammer 8th edition was probably the edition I have enjoyed the most (I've been playing since 4th), it was a little more streamlined than previous editions but still retained most of it's tactical nuances that made it a fantastic mass battle game.

I've been wanting to find a fantasy skirmish game that I can play on the fly, without a lot of rules to get bogged down with, whenever the need takes me. I played WHFB 8th's "Regiments of Renown" skirmish pack rules, but they just didn't do it for me.

I've recently had a few games of AoS and I think they may work for what I was looking for in a skirmish game. But I'd like to get a few more games under my belt before I decide. But small skirmishes are pretty much where these rules be relegated to in my personal hobby time.

I am not ready to let the Old World go when it still has so much to offer. And from what I've seen so far of the new setting... Well... The less said the better... Let's just say it doesn't really grab me.

So in closing.

Whenever I want to play a mass battle game, it'll definitely be 8th edition Warhammer that I go to.

Whenever I want to have a quick, rules light fantasy skirmish, I may use Age of Sigmar. But, with the huge caveat that it will be using the Old World setting.

I've got my 8th ed WHFB collection, I don't ever intend on parting with them. I've downloaded all the rules and army books for Aos... I'm not going to complain at the price ;)Stygianhearthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02157673627988765453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2355959932852753291.post-68650941577155914642015-07-06T21:29:12.854+01:002015-07-06T21:29:12.854+01:00Good article. To make stories and legends amongst the amazingly nuanced old world.

I really do have a lump in my throat to think they wiped it all out. 25 years creating a world of such depth, that some many had invested so much time and thought into. This is something of a hyperbolic punning joke as we are doing nothing of the sort. There is a problem with the marketing-pressure definition of rage quitting. I am seeing a game I've loved for 25 years vanish. The new thing might be some people’s cup of tea, I don't know. But it isn't for me. So, I am done. And a staff member might suggest I was rage quitting, because that is bad and peer pressure helps you conform. But here's the thing. I'm not. Rage Quitting is to throw all of your toys out of the pram, dump the hobby, sell your stuff and never darken the doors again. I'm doing no such thing. I'm happy enough with 8th. That's what I'll play. It'll be harder to find new opponents and there will be no new shiny things for me (unless I find new models I like and call them something else as I've done dozens of times before).

I'm not quitting, I'm just done with their idea of "progress". The design aesthetic has been variable for me for some while, the madder stuff has left me cold. Now, so has the gameplay. That's fine. I press "recover to last workable configuration" button and continue as if nothing has changed.

Doubtless, I will be frustrating to staff on the rare occasions that I go in because I will be useless as far as the trained conversations go. I won't be persuaded to the new shiny thing unless it impresses me and doubtless I'll be written off as a crusty vet unwilling to see the new and cool. But the last thing I’m doing is quitting, the arrogance required to see subjective disapproval as “rage-quit” is pretty extraordinary.

Like I say, I’ll be playing 8, and being very happy.
Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13109377258517790966noreply@blogger.com
